EXETER SUMMER: Level 4 Vowel Teams, R-Controlled Vowels and Complex Phonics
Time: Wednesdays: 6:00-6:50 PM

Level 4:
A supportive, step-by-step course for students who need to strengthen foundational reading skills. We focus on:
✅ Decoding Accuracy
✅ Confidence
✅ Fluent reading
…by explicitly teaching how sounds map to letters and patterns, while also building strong writing habits and applying new skills in connected reading.
📝 What students learn
🤝 Blending strategies
→ Smooth, continuous blending and sound-by-sound “tap & sweep” for both reading and writing.🔗 Digraphs & blends
→ sh/ch/th/wh/ph; beginning and final blends (e.g., bl, str, nd) with practice in decoding and encoding.✨ Tricky phonics rules
→ Silent-e, soft c/g, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, common suffixes (-s, -ed, -ing), and other high-leverage patterns. Multisyllabic word work.✍️ Writing integration
→ Dictation, word building, sentence writing, and quick-write activities to reinforce phonics in authentic ways.📖 Decodable reading practice
→ Targeted passages matched to each skill, supporting fluency, comprehension, and confidence.
The course comes with a take home student journal with targeted weekly decodable passages, writing prompts and word building lessons to continue learning at home!
Learning environment
Students work alongside peers in an age-appropriate, inclusive, and encouraging setting. The atmosphere is supportive and non-judgmental, allowing each learner to take risks, ask questions, and celebrate progress with classmates on a similar journey.
Activities are hands-on and multi-sensory to engage all types of learners!
